TRADITIONAL HAM

Again I have to apologize to everyone for writing my view here on what I think of a Traditional Ham. A single man's view does not represent everybody and neither has it a strength to rebuttal any other definition. But I believe it is a thought provoking idea which could give rise to discussions, debates and disagreements.

A Ham is not a person who talk or communicate throughout the world. A CB radio too takes a person throughout the globe and carrying the culture of QSC cards and systematic SOP. Likewise a computer owner can connect and talk throughout the earth too with additional facility of live image viewing.

A Ham is no a person who talk throughout the world on the ham band because there are many non-hams using ham frequencies communicating worldwide. In fact several are using ham lingo and SOP.

As I have said before than a Ham is a package in which it contains several necessary menu as noted below.

1 - A Ham must pass an examination called RAE ( Radio Amateur Examination ), equivalent or higher.

2. He must know the principal working of a traditional receivers; how a station is selected, local oscillator, IF frequency and what is the LC circuit. BFO and why BFO.

3. He must know the principal working of a transceiver. The oscillator, the modulator, what is AM, FM, and SSB. How SSB is obtained.

4. He must know the basic of an antenna and propagation and how the magnetic waves are formed and traveled.

5. He must also undergo experimental experience.

6. He must be able to understand Morse code and able to send message using it even at a slow speed. He may not pass it but really good at it.

7. He must have ethics.

Those are the least characteristics of a traditional ham. You can add items to it but you can't cut not even half of it. A guest to ham radio who has been called ham has been very welcome and he must adapt himself well. A guest is a person awarded with a ham license even without sitting for RAE, passing Morse or do not have any technical knowledge of receivers or transceivers. They are like the Head of States or special people in society.

The international community can decide to knock off all the 7 items below because without them any person can still talk to the world even using radio wave. Hearing the big number of pirates all over from Indonesia, it looks like the country does not believe in the very definition of ham radio.
